The world’s most expensive World Cup cost $220 billion
In order to host this World Cup, Qatar built 7 brand-new stadiums and refurbished the stadiums. It cost 220 billion US dollars, more than the past 21 sessions. why? It only cost 6.5 billion to build the venue, and the main cost was used to increase urban construction: urban transportation, hotels, subways, airports, cruise ships, and a modern city was built on the desert, and Chinese manufacturing was deeply involved.
The following are the main group companies involved in the construction
- China Railway Construction Corporation
- China Energy Construction Gezhouba Group
- China International Marine Containers Group
- PowerChina International Group Limited
- Leo Group
- LONGi Green Energy
- Sungrow Power Supply Co., Ltd
- China Green Containers
- Yutong Bus Co.,Ltd
- SANY Group
Lusail Stadium – the Largest World Cup Stadium

Lusail Stadium is the world’s largest stadium for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, with a construction area of 195,000 square meters and a capacity of 80,000 people. It is called the “Golden Bowl” in the sand dunes.
It has the largest double-layer cable net roof which covers an area of 56,300 square meters, and the irrigation and maintenance of the turf are provided by China’s Ningxia University with technical support.

The design is inspired by the shape of the traditional date bowl in Qatar, and the golden mesh pattern on the appearance comes from the decorative pattern of the Fanar lantern. The “Golden Bowl” is fully integrated into the national customs of Qatar. So once it came out, it was loved by all walks of life in Qatar. It appears on the currency of Qatar but also on peripheral products such as stamps and commemorative coins.

The Stadium was constructed by China Railway Construction International Group. (中国铁建 http://www.crcc.cn) This is the first time for a Chinese company to participate in the construction of the main stadium of the World Cup as a general contractor of design and construction. During the bidding, CRCC International defeated 11 bidders from 9 countries and finally won the general contract of Lusail Stadium.
More than 7,000 Chinese and foreign builders from 110 companies in more than 20 countries braved the severe epidemic situation and high temperatures and humidity. It took 2118 days to jointly build this modern, high-tech building in the desert.
World’s Largest Reservoir Certified by Guinness

Qatar has a tropical desert climate. There are no complete rivers or permanent lakes in the territory. The average annual precipitation is only about 100 millimeters. It is a country where “water is more expensive than oil”.
In order to enhance the storage capacity of drinking water and provide clean water for the 2022 Football World Cup, the country launched a large-scale water supply project in 2015. After completion, it can meet the water consumption of Qatar for 7 days.
Among them, the water supply E part project was undertaken by Gezhouba Group, mainly including 2 reservoirs each one has a capacity of 500,000 cubic meters and can provide water for 2 million people a day. It is currently the largest single reservoir in the world which is certified by Guinness World Records.

The Largest Photovoltaic Power Station in the Middle East
The power station is Qatar’s first non-fossil fuel power station, one of the largest photovoltaic power stations in the Middle East, and currently the third largest single photovoltaic power generation project in the world.
China Energy Construction Gezhouba Group is responsible for the EPC general contracting of the project, and LONGi Green Energy supplies all components (Hi-MO 4 double-sided modules), and Sungrow supplies inverters (1500V string solution SG250HX).

Why has the project received so much international media attention?
Qatar is rich in oil and gas resources, and it’s CO2 Emissions per Capitaemissions rank first in the world. In September 2020, the Qatar World Cup Organizing Committee formulated measures to deal with the challenge of “carbon neutrality”. “Our aim is to advance low-carbon solutions and offset all greenhouse gas emissions in Qatar and the region,” the committee said in a statement.
On October 18, 2022, the 800-megawatt photovoltaic power station in Alcazar, Qatar was officially put into operation, with a total investment of 417 million US dollars. It is located in the desert 80 kilometers west of Doha, the capital of Qatar. The park covers an area of 10 square kilometers, equivalent to about 1,400 standard footballs. In total, more than 2 million solar panels were installed, with an installed capacity of 800 megawatts. There are unique light and heat resources here. It can provide about 1.8 billion kWh of clean electricity every year, meeting 10% of Qatar’s peak electricity demand, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 300,000 households. Carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by about 900,000 tons per year.
974 Stadiums Under Circular Economy
974 is the country code of Qatar. As a leader in the shipping industry in the Middle East, there are endless ships and containers in Qatar’s many ports, and 70% of the volume of the 974 stadium is “assembled” with 974 containers provided by China International Marine Containers Group

The original intention of Qatar to build this stadium is a circular economy. Designed by Spanish architects, the 974 stadium is a modular structure made of shipping containers and recycled steel(put into these containers when shipping)
The stadium covers an area of 450,000 square meters and can accommodate 40,000 spectators. Workers inserted containers one by one into the main steel structure of the stadium like building blocks and transformed the colorful containers into auditoriums, toilets, shops, etc.
After the event, these containers and steel can be dismantled and reassembled off-site. It can also be disassembled and used for other purposes. For example, containers can be provided to the local poor as houses, and steel can be used in other projects. According to the Qatar 2022 World Cup Supreme Committee, the 974 stadium’s construction, and design have received five-star certification from the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS).

Zhonghui Green Construction is responsible for supplying 2,000 sets of container hotels, 20 sets of fully transparent mobile “star rooms” and a sun room restaurant covering an area of 300 square meters made of all glass

Fans’ Cabins Used in World Cup 2022 Will Be Donated to Kenya

Meixin Group participated in the construction of the fire doors of the World Cup 974 Stadium, and also supplied 48,000 sets of steel doors for the 16,848 rooms of the fan village

Green Transportation Transformation

In terms of transportation, the “Carbon Neutral” World Cup in Qatar introduced a large number of Chinese new energy buses, Yutong Bus, for the first time. There are about 1,500 Yutong buses serving this World Cup, including 888 Yutong pure electric buses, which will serve the public transportation network during the World Cup and undertake the task of connecting officials, media, and fans from various countries to stadiums and venues.
construction machinery
“SANY team” provided nearly 100 Sany equipment such as truck cranes, all-terrain cranes, excavators, pump trucks, mixer trucks, rotary drilling rigs, stackers, etc. attending the construction of all 8 top stadiums in the Qatar World Cup

Finally The Pandas Name Jingjing and Sihai

The country of Qatar also attaches great importance to giant pandas. For this purpose, a panda pavilion of 120,000 square meters was specially built. Well, not only did they prepare a lot of complementary food to supplement their nutrition, but they also airlifted a ton of fresh bamboo from Sichuan every week. Now the two pandas have basically adapted to the environment, and their bodies have gained a lot of weight.
As mentioned by China Railway: More than 7,000 Chinese and foreign builders from 110 companies in more than 20 countries, this is only the construction of the Russell Stadium, more companies, and unknown laborers have not been mentioned, thanks to Their hard work! If you know of builders from other companies, please leave a message in the comments!
